Our indispensible guide to the wines, beers and other drinks available from ‘the loft’ that will help you eat, drink and be merry this Christmas Day!
With family and friends gathering to share food, drink and goodwill, Christmas is a very special time. At ‘the loft’ we’re strong believers in drinking what you like, when you like it, rather than sticking to the ‘laws’ of food pairing. That said, if you’re looking for some inspiration, here are some of the drinks we’ll be enjoying as part of our own festive celebrations to help see you and your guests through Christmas Day – and beyond…
A sparkling start
Whether accompanying a smoked salmon and scrambled egg brunch or enjoyed as a welcome drink for guests, there’s nothing like a little fizz to get a party started in style. We’d recommend the Deseado Sparkling Torrontes at £12.99 a bottle. Fresh and fruity in aroma with wonderful, flowery notes, these bubbles balance natural sweetness and zesty, refreshing acidity.
And they’re off!
A nice wine to accompany starters – especially fish – would be a delicate, dry white like the Longbend Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Coming in at £11.95 a bottle it blends aromas of cut grass, pink grapefruit and fresh currants with a crisp palate reminiscent of guava and ripe pear. Simply delicious!
The main event
If you’re planning to enjoy the traditional Christmas meal of Turkey (with all the trimmings) a good Pinot Noir makes a great wine match. We’ll be enjoying ‘The Dagger’ Riposte by Tim Knappstein; hailing from the Adelaide Hills this wine’s bright cherry, raspberry and red plum flavours alongside supple tannins and vibrant acidity make it a real winner in our eyes, available from the loft at £18.99 a bottle.
Meanwhile, the increasingly popular multi-bird roast demands a wine with real body and some underlying tannin to offset the rich flavours. We’d suggest the divine Ramon Bilbao Limited Edition Rioja – and with standard 750cl, 1.5, 3 & 5 litre bottles available there’s a ‘centrepiece’ bottle whether you’re feeding 2 or 22! Prices start from £12.50 for a ‘standard’ bottle.
If you’re enjoying a less traditional Christmas lunch – perhaps a super-rich Beef Wellington – then Alpataco Malbec would be a cracking choice. This Argentinian beauty’s complex red fruit nose and fresh, fruity palate gained from ageing in small oak barrels is yours to enjoy at £10.95 a bottle.
And those who just ‘don’t do’ red, we do have an alternative selection – the De Wetshof Bon Vallon Chardonnay – matured in French oak barrels, this is a white that packs enough of a ‘punch’ to stand up to those festive flavours perfectly at £9.99 a bottle.
Alongside desert, we’ll be staying ‘down under’ with a glass of the delightful Wairau River Gewürtztraminer. This fragrant New Zealand white combines delicious notes of elderflower, rose petal and lychee with delicate spice and a lingering finish £11.95 a bottle.
Boxing Day beauty
Cooking up a turkey curry storm for Boxing Day? Then why not consider a bottle of De Bortoli Willowglen Gewertztraminer Reisling or a Paulett’s Sparkling Red to accompany – the former offering a fragrant palate of rose, musk and sweet spice and the latter packed full of fruit flavour and ‘zing’. Both best served chilled at £10.50 and £13.99 a bottle respectively.
It’s not just the ‘big day’ that calls for a stock of great wines over the Christmas period – and the loft also stocks a great selection of wines and beers that are perfect for guests. For entertaining, you can’t fail with our brilliant Santa Alba Chilean range, which includes Reserva Sauvignon Blanc, Merlots, Malbecs and a Pinot Noir; offering something for all tastes at affordable prices from £6.99.
What do you buy the wine – or beer – lover who has everything? More wine or beer, of course! Alongside a great selection of wines to suit all palates – including Premier Cru Bordeaux, Champagne, Chablis, top quality Amarones, German and Austrian whites – and both local and continentally brewed beers, ‘the loft’ also has limited quantities of seasonal spirits. With gin, vodka, single malt whisky, rum, bourbon and more on offer you can find some great gifts and, if in doubt, gift vouchers are also available.
The Wolseley Wine Loft, located on the A51 between Rugeley and Stafford, is open Thursday & Friday 12 noon- 7pm, Saturday 11am – 7pm and Sunday 11am – 4.30pm.
